Community Groups Support Union Concessions for Oakland Budget Deal
COALITION APPLAUDS UNION LEADERSHIP FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO SOLVE CITIES HISTORIC BUDGET DEFICIT AND URGES COUNCIL TO ACCEPT
OAKLAND, CA- Oakland Rising, a coalition of Oakland's most respected community development organizations, applauds the concessions made by the Oakland’s top unions to help curb the disastrous $58 million budget deficit confronting the city.
This week IFPTE Local 21, IBEW Local 1245, OPOA, and IAFF Local 55 have negotiated with the City of Oakland, accounting for $28 million in costs savings. Members from each union will vote in the coming days to approve the terms of the negotiations before City Council votes to pass a budget by the June 30 deadline.
“With the interests of thousands of Oakland’s most vulnerable residents in mind, we stand in strong support of this courageous step taken by our most respected unions,” said Esperanza Tervalon-Daumont of Oakland Rising , “It’s important that there is an understanding for the need of shared responsibility in this time of crisis.”
Oakland Rising has worked with community and labor organizations to call on the City Council to:
- Collect on revenue currently on the city’s accounting books, before cutting vital Quality of Life services.
- Prioritize Quality of Life services as core services that contribute to a holistic approach to public safety.
- Shared responsibility and contributions by everyone who works, lives and does business in Oakland.
- Prioritize progressive measures that bring new money into Oakland.
As representatives of the the greater Oakland community, Oakland Rising supports a budget that minimizes the sacrifices required from vulnerable Oakland residents by prioritizing funding for quality of life services that our communities depend on.
We urge the City Council to continue working together to pass a budget that uses Oakland Rising’s guiding principles and supports the concessions made by Oakland’s unions.
