Lobby Day!

Wednesday, August 14, 2019 (All day)

We're going back to Sacramento to bring our power and truth to the Capitol! Join us on this year's Ella Baker Center Lobby Day; RSVP

We will be offering free transportation and food but you must RSVP.  You do not have to prior lobbying or policy experience to join. Join us for a full day event! We will be meeting and leaving from Oakland.

Our member-led teams will speak directly with policymakers on key bills that impact our membership family including:

  1. SB 144 (Holly Mitchell– LA) – Ends court fines and fees. This bill stops many of the fines and fees people face in court that hurt people without means the most.
  2. SB 136 (Scott Weiner– SF) – Repealing the 1-year enhancement. Sentence enhancements like the 1-year stack extra time against those without means and those communities that are targeted by law enforcement. We're going to the Capitol to get rid of it.
  3. AB 45 (Mark Stone– Santa Cruz) – Eliminating medical copays in prisons and jails. Prisons and jails charge a fee before you can see a doctor even though people locked up make pennies a day if anything at all. Folks inside are going without other basic needs because jails and prisons put them in medical debt. This bill will help everyone locked-up in California when it is law.

We're also holding trainings to talk about any bill that impacts us! Contact Derick@ellabakercenter.org for more details.
