Member Spotlight: Gindla
Originally from New York, Gindla joined the Ella Baker Center when she moved to the Bay Area over two years ago. She was searching for a way to get more meaningfully involved in her new community.
She originally heard about the Ella Baker Center through a friend when our new membership program began in 2015. She didn’t know very much about the landscape in Oakland, but wanted to get involved locally.
Members of the Ella Baker Center organize to win jobs not jails, books not bars, and healthcare not handcuffs. At a time when people in power want to strip our communities of our resources and rights, we believe it's more important than ever that we stand together and demand what we need.
For Gindla, becoming an Ella Baker Center member offered an “opportunity to do something tangible and meaningful.” The Ella Baker Center has given her a range of opportunities to get involved, take initiative, and meet local people from the community. What she finds most valuable about the membership is the way it brings people together.
“It was more within my power to speak up and speak out”
Right now, there is a lot to feel frustrated and angry about--for those looking for a way or place to get involved, the Ella Baker Center’s membership is a place to start.
“If you have been hesitating, just reach out. Check out when the next member meeting is [September 27]. You will get a sense of the community environment and will learn a lot about what is happening through the discussion and action points. There will also be opportunities and tangible ways to get involved on a variety of levels.”
Getting involved is an easy first step. As Gindla says: “Make that leap from hey I want to do this, to I am going to check this out!”
“This is a good supportive community to be involved in if you do not have an avenue through which to do work.”
During a time when too much injustice is happening, resistance is needed and you can be a part of it.
So if you are looking for ways to become more politically active or to organize with people who want to make our communities safer and more just for us all, join us at our next member meeting.
Like Gindla says, “becoming a member is the first part of showing up.” We can’t wait to see you at our next meeting!
