The Promise of Peace on our Streets

Silence the Violence Day was an amazing success. With events on both sides of the Bay and more than 500 people coming out, we remembered those we've lost and promised to work toward a day when no one would be killed on our streets.

At 9am, the Bay Area's premier hip hop station, 106 KMEL, silenced the music before a special Silence the Violence morning show hosted by Chuy Gomez. The show featured Ella Baker Center's Nicole Lee and Rudy Corpus of United Playaz as well as two mothers who have lost their sons to violence.

Listen to the show in our podcast section.

At 6pm, candlelight vigils - in Oakland and San Francisco - honored those we've lost to violence.
Oakland's program included:

  • Van Jones, Ella Baker Center President
  • Olis Simmons, Director of the Youth UpRising Center
  • Assemblyman Sandre Swanson
  • Youth Rappers from Cov. Records
  • many more

Check out some photos of the event.

The San Francisco vigil and program was hosted by United Playaz. It was a moving event and included a procession through the Tenderloin followed by a candlelight vigil.

106 KMEL produced some PSAs for the event. Listen to them here:
