Families for Books Not Bars

Read personal stories from a few of our members.

Families for Books Not Bars is the first-ever statewide network for families of incarcerated youth. We organize parents, grandparents, siblings and relatives whose children are caught in the juvenile justice system. Our members have had to watch as a system that is supposed to provide their children with guidance and help instead abuses and neglects them. We've learned that the system not only harms the children, it also traumatizes the families. Our members have fought for their children's rights and have joined with Books Not Bars to fight for all of California's youth. Across the state, we have more than 1,000 members and we're continuing to grow. We provide our members with:

  • Individual support;
  • Resources and information;
  • Opportunities to engage in public education, advocacy, media, legislative outreach and mass mobilizations.

We train our members in grassroots organizing and to advocate for their family members in the system.
