Organizational Background

The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights (“EBC”) is a nonprofit organization based in Oakland, CA, working to advance racial and economic justice to ensure dignity and opportunity for low-income people and people of color. In our 20 year history, we have worked on issues including jump starting the green jobs movement, promoting civic engagement, violence prevention through youth leadership, and transforming juvenile justice systems in California.  We are currently working to end mass incarceration and mass criminalization in the United States through Truth and Reinvestment—moving resources away from failed criminal justice policies and into creating opportunities, also known as “books not bars, jobs not jails, healthcare not handcuffs.”

Director of Communications

The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights is seeking a bright, dedicated individual with a passion for racial, economic, and gender justice. The Director of Communications will be responsible for leading and developing the organization’s communications strategy to amplify our mission and vision. The ideal candidate is a strategic and mature thinker that understands the need for short term and long terms goals and victories, practices solutions-oriented approaches to dealing with conflicts, is a strong team player, has a low-ego, high-impact approach, and puts the mission of the organization first.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and develop the strategic communications plan for the Ella Baker Center, including ongoing development of messages that uplift our programmatic work and mission
  • Ensure that branding and messaging are consistent in all internal and external communications
  • Manage the development of all print and electronic collateral including brochures, one-pagers, outreach materials, and all online content.
  • Develop culture shift strategies in collaboration with Ella Baker Center partners, including leading communications strategies for Night Out for Safety and Liberation
  • Supervise the execution of the organization’s digital strategy, including management of our website, blog, e-mail announcements, and social media presence.
  • Supervise and/or execute the writing, editing, and distribution of press releases, opinion pieces, memos to editorial boards, and organizational statements
  • Lead development of communication strategies on campaigns, projects, and the Ella Baker Center’s legislative agenda
  • Build and sustain relationships with journalists and media influencers locally, statewide, and nationally to raise the Ella Baker Center’s profile
  • Pitch reporters and producers at local, statewide, and national outlets on our campaign work; pitch Ella Baker Center staff to TV and radio shows
  • Manage communications contractors and contract additional support as needed on high priority projects
  • Supervise communications team

Qualifications:

  • 5 or more years experience in strategic communications, preferably related to racial and economic justice issues
  • Excellent writing, editing, verbal, presentation, and analytical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Experience managing staff, with proven leadership abilities
  • Extensive experience in working with new, social, and traditional media.
  • Proven commitment to and knowledge of issues relating to racial, economic, and gender justice
  • Ability to work independently as well as participate on a team.
  • Disciplined self-starter who can set and achieve goals.
  • Knowledge of and interest in digital communications strategies and platforms (Drupal proficiency preferred)
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills; adept at managing competing priorities and deadlines
  • Comfortable and skilled at communicating with very diverse audiences
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, web browsers, and database development
  • Willingness to travel as necessary

Essential Job Requirements

  • Needs to be able to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Needs to be able to operate a computer for most of the working hours.
  • Needs to be able to operate office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and printer.
  • This position needs to be able to use a telephone and communicate with the general public.

Development Associate

Responsibilities:

  • Provide administrative support to the Director of Development and to the Restore Oakland Campaign Director.
  • Supervise and support development interns and volunteers.
  • Process and acknowledge all grants, gifts, and pledges in accordance with the organization’s processing and stewardship policies and procedures.
  • Maintain confidential and accurate donor records.
  • Field calls and inquiries regarding donations and membership dues.
  • Work with Director of Finance and Operations to reconcile donor database with accounting system.
  • Maintain integration and efficiencies of the organization’s online fundraising platform.
  • Provide technical support to staff on the Salesforce database, running reports and lists, and providing ongoing training and consultation as needed.
  • Provide logistical support for fundraising-related events and meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years in a development position.
  • At least 2 years experience in position with significant finance and/or administrative responsibilities.
  • Ability to multitask and handle competing demands; prioritize and manage focus and productivity effectively; ability to manage time and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate strong initiative and leadership.
  • Ability to be discreet and judicious with non-routine and private information.
  • Ability to be responsive to inquiries and maintain a customer service orientation.
  • Superior organizational skills, and the ability to create, implement, and maintain systems and processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills (oral and written).
  • Experience with CRM databases, Salesforce preferred; experience with online donation platforms preferred.
  • Proficiency in Mac interfaces and all Microsoft Office applications.
  • Familiarity with and commitment to racial and social justice; clear understanding of EBC’s mission and programs.
  • High school diploma or GED; college diploma a plus.
  • Nonprofit experience, bilingual skills a plus.
  • Graphic design, data visualization, and presentation support skills a plus.

Salary range: $46,500 - $52,000
