I'm Marching on March 5th
On January 27, 2012 I got off work and drove like a maniac to Laney College where I ran my out-of-shape self from the parking lot all the way to the B building room 247. I tumbled into that classroom completely out of breath with beads of salty liquids dripping and shamelessly proud. I would be the newest member of this beautiful class. I could already blissfully taste the enlightenment.

Shame on you CCA!
I’ve been working on issues of police accountability, locked-up youth, violence, and community investment for a long time. Sometimes I think that no example of injustice could still surprise me. I was recently proved wrong.

Today, We March for Dignity
On Friday morning (February 17th), hundreds of people rallied and marched with workers recently fired from Pacific Steel in Berkeley after a federal immigrations crackdown on their workplace.  Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents audited their factory in December and demanded the firing of all workers without social security numbers.

On February 7, 2012, the Oakland City Council voted on a resolution aimed at preventing future protests from disrupting the Port of Oakland. Council members sparred with Occupy supporters in a struggle to keep them quiet when opponents and council members were speaking. I watched the video posted by Oakfosho, which unlike the videos posted on the government’s website, continuously spanned the audience.

Use Your Money- Why buy local?
Growing up in the Midwest, I spent a fair amount of time at the local mall. That's kind of where teen social life happened in my town. We would spend a lot of time anticipating what big, hip chain might set up shop next. Maybe the Gap will come... maybe we'll get a Target!
