I was 23 years old the 1st time that a friend who I considered a peer tested positive for the HIV virus. The night he received the news,  we did a lot of crying, a lot of talking, and even some shouting at the moon.

December 1st is World AIDS day, and 2011 also marks 30 years since the first AIDS cases were reported back in 1981. While many accomplishments have been achieved over the past 30 years, HIV/AIDS is still around today. Treatment and knowledge has greatly improved, however, a common problem still exists: people don’t know their status.
