I will never forget the name Lionel Tate. In 2001, internationally acclaimed emcee and actor, Mos Def showed up unannounced to a political hip-hop show I helped organize in Los Angeles. We were all excited and curious as he made his way to the stage, but he didn’t come to perform that night. He came to advocate, and he came to teach.
