With two weeks left before the run—yes, two weeks!!—I bring to you another of our amazing members of Team Ella Baker Center, Eric Fuller II. I found Eric’s perspective on fitness as being about playfulness and having fun quite refreshing, and a shift from what most mainstream sources tell us about why and how we should exercise. I’ll let him introduce himself here, and share with you his views on the ongoing importance of fitness and movement in his daily life.

  My relationship to exercise and fitness is complex, and deeply rooted into my identity. When I grow athletically, I grow spiritually, too. When I was very young, I was a ballerina. I tap danced. I was on the swim team. I played games with anyone of any age and gender, because I loved the freedom of being able to move my body in

Reasons to Run
When my co-workers asked me to write a quick blog post about the benefits of running I thought it would be a piece of cake. My other job is coaching cross country running and track and field at Skyline High School here in Oakland so knowing a thing or two about the numerous health benefits of running and exercise (there are many) is something I pride myself on. But for some reason I just couldn’t write.

Last night, Team Ella Baker Center kicked off with a bang. Already we have over 40 runners who have collectively raised over $1300. We have seasoned runners as well as folks participating in a running event for the very 1st time.

I was the kind of kid that adults liked to call non-athletic. I wasn't uncoordinated or weird enough to be the last one picked for recess games. But I also was a better cheerleader and fun teammate than I was an actual athletic asset.
