Edible Roof Top Garden Service Project

Earlier this month, we teamed up with Oakland Food Connection for a day of service at E.C. Reems Academy in East Oakland. Together we worked on an edible roof top garden that serves as a living classroom for students learning how to prepare simple, healthy meals from the food they grow onsite.

On Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012 Mayor Jean Quan, gave her first State of the City speech entitled “Oakland is on the Rise” to an audience of Oakland’s community, labor, business, athletic, musical and grassroots leaders.  As one of Oakland’s native daughters, the mother of a young son and the Executive Director of Oakland Rising, I listened to the State of the City pensively.

This morning, I read the Colorlines article about Rihanna’s new song, “Birthday Cake” featuring her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown.  The release of this song comes three years after Chris Brown attacked his then-girlfriend on the eve of the Grammys, inflicting a split lip, a black eye and other injuries.

Today, We March for Dignity

On Friday morning (February 17th), hundreds of people rallied and marched with workers recently fired from Pacific Steel in Berkeley after a federal immigrations crackdown on their workplace.  Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents audited their factory in December and demanded the firing of all workers without social security numbers.
