On this day in 1963 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke for 17 minutes before a crowd of hundreds of thousands. He shared his dreams for a nation where freedom, equity, and safety were a reality for each and every American.

On the anniversary of the momentus I Have a Dream Speech we asked Ella Baker Center staff, members, and Facebook friends about their dream for our country. This is what they said. 

I have a dream that is quite simple. I dream of people across this country coming together--  block by block and town by town--  to change their communities for the better. To work together to build an economy that works for everyone, a healthier and more inclusive democracy, and to truly achieve justice and freedom for all.   - Jakada Imani

I have a dream that profit driven bankers will be held accountable and all families can live comfortably in their homes.  - Ricardo Morán

I have a dream that all people living in this country are equally respected-- not because of how much money they have, who they want to marry, or where they were born-- but because they are human.  - Jessica De Jesus

I dream of a country -- and a world -- where everyone has a chance to live their dreams, no matter what circumstances they're born into. I also dream of a world in which greed is not the most celebrated human quality. I have a dream that people will be treated as people. Not animals. That one day there will be no such thing as gay rights, women's rights, but instead HUMAN rights. I dream of a nation where people can have their opinion and allow others to have theirs, without imposing their opinion on other's rights. I dream of a nation that recycles and reuses energy. A nation no longer striving to survive but thriving in the forefront of medicine and UNIVERSAL health care. A place where the youth care about what is happening now, because they realize what they think and feel matters. That it isn't "time for adult talk" but time for ALL to speak up. A nation that wants to love and care for their neighbor, not fight them. I dream of a passionate country, but more so, I dream of a compassionate country.  - Le Roi Davis
