Throw Down for the Town: Help Two Oakland Organizations
Abel Guillen for State Assembly will be hosting two service projects for Throw Down for The Town. One will be at Serenity House and the other at Elmhurst United Methodist Church.
Serenity house was originally established as a recovery program for women who were suffering from addictions. However the program has evolved into an organization which provides shelter and services for women who have been raped or molested as children and who have suffered from addictions. As many of these women have been homeless and suffered from mental health and or emotional issues caused by trauma.
The shelter includes all types of women including veterans, and since returning home have suffered from PTSD as well as issues that were unresolved when they entered the military.
Serenity House has had a 78% rate of clients who have successfully completed the program and have been able to continue their education and establish successful careers.
As the entire staff is made up of volunteers, who are committed to giving excellent service through their generous support through critical times of these women’s lives. Make a donation today!
Sadly, however Serenity House is being forced by their landlord to move to a different location. Therefore during Throw Down for the Town we will be extending our support by helping them pack, move boxes and paint their new location. As this shelter is in need of community support we’re asking for donations - money, clothing, furniture and other items would be helpful. SIgn up to help us help Serenity House.
We will also be hosting a project at the Elmhurst United Methodist Church, a connectional church connected by a system to guide their work and govern their policies. This also allows the church to pool resources so that they may effectively work together and be in ministry throughout the world. This is an amazing church led by a dynamic young pastor, Nicole Jennifer Harris.
The church will be holding a Women's Breakfast to help enrich our community's spiritual health. We are a looking for volunteers who will help clean, cook and serve breakfast. Will you volunteer?
