First-ever Congressional hearing on solitary confinement in the U.S.

The Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Human Rights will hold the first-ever Congressional hearing on solitary confinement in the U.S on June 19, 2012. The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights submitted testimony on solitary confinement of youth (PDF).

From protesting to proposing new law, The Ella Baker Center has fought hard against solitary confinement of our youth. Drawing from our expertise and families’ and youths’ experiences, we detail the harmful effects of solitary confinement on youth, and urge Congress to ensure that California and the rest of the country meet basic human rights standards.

Take action with us to urge Senators to adopt our recommendations.
