Solitary Confinement Bill Fails to Move Out of Committee
It’s a sad day when basic human rights take a back seat to the powerful influence the prison guard union has over our elected leaders. Books Not Bars’ solitary confinement bill, SB 1363 (Yee) failed to pass out of the Senate Public Safety Committee by one vote. In the end, pressure from bill supporters, constituents, and even an editorial in the Los Angeles Times, could not persuade two of the Democratic Senators Curren Price and Ron Calderon and the two Republican Senators Tom Harman and Joel Anderson to support the bill that would limit the inhumane practice of solitary confinement against youth in juvenile facilities. While we are disappointed at the outcome of the hearing, our commitment to transforming California’s juvenile justice system is unwavering. Closing the Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) is the first step to ensuring a better future for our youth. Everyone knows the DJJ is a complete failure, including the governor. Everyone but the prison guard union—they care more about their special interests than the welfare of our youth.
We cannot allow the prison guard union’s deep pockets to stand in the way of doing what’s right for California and our youth. That is why Books Not Bars will continue to organize family members of incarcerated youth and advocate for reform of our juvenile justice system untl each and every last one of the DJJ prisons are shut once and for all.
